about

In the works for nearly a year, St. Louis-based Singer & Songwriter Andy Puechner (who performs under the name Dutch Courage) is releasing an EP-length tribute to the music of his friend Tom Behrendt on October 23rd. Tom was a talented Singer / Songwriter / Guitarist / D.I.Y. Recording Engineer from Milwaukee, WI who unexpectedly ended his life in October 2012. As Puechner states:

"I tried my best to choose songs that represented Tom’s catalog, songwriting, and sense of humor. I also strove to make the covers sonically different from the originals, as I know Tom would be completely bored with “straight-up” covers."

The Devil On The Left Shoulder E.P. releases 10/23. Download cards will be available at upcoming shows in St. Louis where Dutch Courage will be performing several of these songs. Proceeds from all sales will support AFSP.org's mission to prevent suicide.

****

Many thanks to Mike Behrendt for allowing me to pursue this project, and to Paul Hancock for curating Tom’s digital archive.

about

Dutch Courage St. Louis, Missouri

Dutch Courage is the alter-ego of St. Louis based songwriter Andy Puechner, who has been writing and performing his bedroom- folk & pop stylings since the summer of 2003. The music is centered around Puechner's voice & fingerstyle guitar work- melodic hooks are simultaneously barbed and gentle, with lyrics somehow both bitter and sweet, optimistic & wry.

Folk & Pop without fences.

Track Name: Smile At Chinese People
You should smile at Chinese people when you pass them on the street
Smile at Chinese people, 'cause they're people after all
They're a long way from their homeland, and they miss their family and friends
I'm sure that they get lonely, and aren't having too much fun

I want you to smile at Chinese people
You should smile at Chinese people
You should smile at Chinese people 'cause you never know
Someday you may go somewhere across the globe
an be all alone

I'm sure you smile at certain people 'cause they look so pretty and nice
and smile at homely people, to lift their spirits up
I want you to smile at Chinese people like you smile at blacks and whites
It sure doesn't take much effort to show them your front teeth

I want you to smile at Chinese people
You should smile at Chinese people
You should smile at Chinese people 'cause you never know
Someday you may go somewhere across the globe
an be all alone

These Chinese people are bringing me down-
all they do is frown sometimes I wish they weren't around this town at all

Smile at Chinese people, I wish you would
And be all alone
Track Name: Force Majeure
Who do you blame?
Is it the baker or the bread?
Is it the living or the dead?
Is it something you could name?

Seventh heaven interrupted
With tuning fork tones that tried to warn
an infundibular wind had just formed
outside our one-horse town
It brang us Albrechtus let's make this long story short-
Man, that was one twisted tornado

We picked through the pieces
of all we had lost and tried to glean
What could this catastrophe mean?
We were looking for a sign

So we walked to the factory
where my townsfolk all worked making spirographs
In the rubble there was writ our epitaph
of intersecting curves
Insurance man came, said "We don't cover acts of God."
Man, that was one twisted tornado

I wanna get to the bottom of it
with a spade of epistemology
but I dig and I dig and all I get
is a shovel-full of wind
It brang us Albrechtus let's make this long story short-
Man, that was one twisted tornado
Track Name: House Painter
Well, it's strange seeing you here
but I guess it's just where you are
We should go out for dinner
I know a Greek joint just down the street

The baklava there is so sweet
it makes your teeth hurt
and I just got paid yesterday
so this one is my treat

You've got a whole world canned fart,
dog food, and novelty erasers
jangling round in your memory
and they say you're bored

They say you were raised by TV
and don't always eat right
If I close the door on you now
you'll just go out like a fridge light

Do you remember years ago?
I lost my eye and they gave me a glass one
I stuck it in my belly hole
and chased you around the yard for hours
shouting "I am going to get you!"
Track Name: Wake Up, Jane
This song is for Janey because
she doesn't like my songs
Says my rhymes are lazy and my
sentences much too long
Just to mess with her I'll
drop the rhyme scheme just three lines in

Well, let me ask this thorny little question
Janey my old friend
What's the meter you'd prefer I use to measure
the way your heart beats when I hum in your ear?

Empty beer cans rattle in the
bed of my pickup truck
Sounds like they're applauding me
every time that I make a turn
"Hey, look at me I get accolades!"
for just remembering where Jane lives

Modestly I tell them, "Thank you, thank you.
You are much too kind
and I'm sorry that you'll miss
the final number"

That's when I park the car and
walk in her house
Topple the coatrack
Kick out the roommate
Let loose the housecat
and shout "Wake Up, Jane!"
